Your Guide to The Tower of London Jun 13

The Tower of London has stood guard beside the River Thames for nearly a thousand years, first as a stern fortress where the conquering Normans kept watch over unruly Saxon London, and later a fearsome prison, a place of torture and execution.

Today the Tower is one of London’s most popular and historically-rich tourist attractions. It is easy to reach by underground and bus from most London hotels and a visit to the Tower is a good choice for tourists on short London breaks who may only have time to see a few attractions.

Although its name suggests a single building, the Tower of London is a sprawling construction of several towers, defensive walls, keeps, dungeons and open spaces. At its heart is the White Tower, the strong stone keep built by William the Conqueror in 1066 to keep control over his newly acquired city. Later sovereigns added more walls and towers, and it became known one of the best-defended fortresses in Europe.

The Tower was built as a royal residence, but from its earliest days it also held prisoners within its walls. By the 15th Century it was infamous as a place of imprisonment, torture and execution, and its inmates included the Elizabeth the First before she became queen. Elizabeth survived her visit, but many others were not so fortunate: King Henry the Sixth, Anne Boleyn, the traitor Guy Fawkes, and the pirate Captain Kidd are among those who met their ends here. Anne Boleyn’s ghost is said to haunt the chapel where she is buried, and to walk around the White Tower carrying her head under her arm.

Perhaps the most infamous tale is the imprisonment in 1483 of the 16-year-old King Edward V and his younger brother Richard, who were given ‘accommodations’ in the tower by their uncle, the Duke of Gloucester. The princes were sometimes seen playing in the tower grounds – but they were never seen again after the summer of that year. Suspicion for their murder fell on their uncle the duke, who became King Richard III during their imprisonment.

Over the centuries the Tower of London has been used as an arsenal for weapons, as a zoo, and as a royal mint. Today it serves as a museum of its own history, and for the display the British Crown Jewels. The Tower’s Jewel House was by Henry III in the 14th Century, after the royal regalia was stolen from Westminster Abbey and later recovered. Today items from the modern collection of Crown Jewels are displayed at Waterloo barracks in the Tower.

The jewels and the Tower site today are guarded by the Yeomen Warders – known as the ‘Beefeaters’ – a company of retired senior non-commissioned officers from the armed forces of the British Commonwealth. Today the Beefeaters act as tour guides for visitors to the Tower, and in their distinctive ceremonial uniforms they have become a tourist attraction in their own right.

The Tower of London is easy to reach from most London hotels. The site is next to the Tower Hill underground station on the Circle Line, and a short walk to the Tower Gateway light rail station and Fenchurch Street train station. Many London Transport buses heading east along the north side of the Thames from Embankment or Westminster stations will stop at the Tower of London.
