The Princess Cruise line is a highly reputable organisation with a great history. They have been around since 1965 are a subsidiary of Carnival Cruise lines. The first ship was the Princess Patricia, but since it lacked air conditioning there were major issues when porting in Los Angeles and travelling the Mexican Riviera – which are very warm destinations.

Founder Stanley McDonald decided to utilise the Italia instead, which was designed with more space and didn’t look nearly as cluttered. However, it was not named the Princess Italia until 1967. The L.A. to Mexican Riviera cruises were successful enough to branch by 1969. The Princess Cruise line decided to open up Alaskan cruises that would port from San Francisco. In 1974 the Peninsular Oriental Steam Navigation Company acquired the Princess Cruise line.
