A Detailed History of the Princess Cruise Line Mar 29

The Princess Cruise line is a highly reputable organisation with a great history. They have been around since 1965 are a subsidiary of Carnival Cruise lines. The first ship was the Princess Patricia, but since it lacked air conditioning there were major issues when porting in Los Angeles and travelling the Mexican Riviera – which are very warm destinations.

Founder Stanley McDonald decided to utilise the Italia instead, which was designed with more space and didn’t look nearly as cluttered. However, it was not named the Princess Italia until 1967. The L.A. to Mexican Riviera cruises were successful enough to branch by 1969. The Princess Cruise line decided to open up Alaskan cruises that would port from San Francisco. It lasted for only four years and the ship was sent to charter the Costa Cruise line.

In 1974 the Peninsular Oriental Steam Navigation Company acquired the Princess Cruise line. During the 1970s, the Love Boat television series was a major hit and provided cruises around the world a comical treat during the week. This was extremely beneficial to Princess Cruises, because two of their ships were featured in the show.

Slowly but surely we were watching a small empire begin to develop. The Princess line of ships offered 3 major contributors at the time (Island, Pacific, and Sea Princess), but the first P&O built ship under the Princess name didn’t come until 1984 when the Royal Princess was introduced. The benefit surrounding this ship was the interior cabins that were available.

When 1986 came the Princess Cruise line was back in Alaska. This was a huge success that is still going strong today. In fact, they now have railcars available for scenic tours on land. This helped them purchase more ships and expand over larger territories. By 1990 they offered a large fleet of ships in various locations for tourists to enjoy.

Things were going well until 1998 when there was a lawsuit against General Electric. Princess Cruise line had to cancel two different 10-day cruises in order for repairs to be made. There was much debate over the situation where Princess won a $4.6 million dollar suit, but it was later overturned. They ended up receiving $232,000 when it was all said and done.

Fast forward to the latter part of the last decade and the Princess Cruise line decided to stop building any ships in 2008, but by 2010 they went with two more additions. You won’t find these as a part of their fleet until 2013 and 2014.

In the last 55 years the Princess Cruise line has gone from a small project to a monumental piece of Carnival UK. If you’re looking for a cruise line that will provide you with a lavish holiday around the world, the Princess Cruise line could be your best choice. They have spent half a century creating a credible company with ports all over for you to enjoy.

You can spend the weekend relaxing to the music in the glorious summer weather, however, be prepared for all weather conditions. Packing the right festival clothes will enable you to fit in with everyone else as well as being comfortable.
