Tenerife – Your Must Have Hotel Guide Oct 22

Tenerife Your Must Have Hotel Guide

Holidays to Tenerife come in all shapes and sizes, from all-inclusive resort complexes with private beaches and sculpted gardens, to budget guest houses on the beach. With over 800 hotels and apartment complexes to choose from, Tenerife has something for everyone.

Most holidays to Tenerife are taken in the cluster of resorts around Playa de Las Américas. Playa itself has 8 fantastic beaches and is known as the party capital of the Canaries. Top end is the Cleopatra Palace, part of the 5-star Mare Nostrum resort, with a huge range of leisure facilities. Budget-conscious families will enjoy the 3-star Caribe apartments complex, which has a kids pool and tennis courts. Other choices include the Best Hotel, Bitacora Hotel and the California apartments.

Los Cristianos, located nearby is a quieter resort retaining much of its traditional fishing village charm. The sophisticated Arona Gran hotel, overlooking the harbour, is popular with older couples while the Paradise Park Resort and H10 Oasis Hotel offer a range of leisure facilities in elevated positions. Budget choices include the Bahia Colon, Andreas, Sol Princess and Costa Mar, all located close to the beaches.

Costa Adeje is Playa Las Americas sophisticated sister. Its 73 hotels include exclusive 5-star resorts like the Vincci La Plantation Dream Gran Tacande, Jardines De Nivaria Hotel and magnificent Gran Bahia Del Duque. The Tinerfe Garden and Villa Las Flores are among the best budget hotels. Other choices include the Costa Adeje Gran, Castalia Brezos, Bahia Princess and Pueblo Torviscas Hotel – built in the style of an Andalucian village. Costa del Silencio, one of Tenerife’s first purpose-built resorts, is close by.

Tenerife has a number of other resort areas. Puerto de la Cruz, on the north coast, is a popular winter sun destination that includes the 5-star Botanico Grand Deluxe, the most prestigious hotel in the Canary Islands. At the other end of the scale, the Bambi is a small, family-friendly complex that’s among the cheapest hotels on the island.

Lanzarote Food & Drink Guide Oct 22

 Lanzarote Food & Drink Guide

Lanzarote has hundreds of bars and restaurants, ranging from family-friendly cafes, to Canarian seafood restaurants, to authentic Thai and Indian restaurants.

Lanzarote cuisine revolves around meat such as goat, chicken and beef, most commonly. However, seafood is also widespread – the coastal village of El Golfo is renowned for its fish restaurants. Vegetarian cuisine is largely restricted to European restaurants in the larger towns, but you’ll find tortillas and wrinkled potatoes – the island speciality – everywhere. The local wine, Malvasia, is extremely good, and widely served.

Many people book holidays to Lanzarote’s largest resort, Puerto del Carmen, because of its “Britishness.” This isn’t really the place to come for traditional tapas bars, although the Canarian restaurant of La Tegala is widely considered to be the best on the island. You’ll find some good British restaurants, as well as cosy coffee shops and karaoke pubs. Casa Siam, the island’s only Thai restaurant, serves authentic curries and locally caught fish.

The island’s most famous inhabitant was the artist Cesar Monrique and the El Diablo Restaurant, at Timanfaya National Park, was one of his designs, and serves barbeques over the vent of a volcano! Another great place to dine is the Manrique-designed Casa-Museo Al Campesino, in Mozaga. Serving traditional Canarian food and wine, it offers cool seating inside the huge volcanic cavern, called a Jameo. Jameos del Agua is a fascinating cavern complex where you can dine, drink and dance in “Flintstones” style surroundings.

Holidays to Lanzarote often start at the capital of Arricife, which has some of the best eateries on the island. Try the Castillo De San José for locally caught seafood, or the Café La Terraza for a quick snack. The Fortress restaurant has lovely views in historic surroundings.

Wherever you go in Lanzarote, you will find the Teleclubs. Friendly bars catering mainly for locals, they serve authentic Canarian cuisine and local wines at very reasonable prices.

Why has Dalaman grown so much in popularity? Oct 22

Why has Dalaman grown so much in popularity?

Dalaman is one of Turkey’s most historic and beautiful regions, holidays to Dalaman are becoming increasingly popular with British holidaymakers. With year-round sunshine, curving sandy bays, ancient landmarks and a lush natural landscape, holidays to Dalaman are perfect for families wanting to mix sun, sea and sand with spectacular scenery and culture.

Dubbed “The Gateway to the Turquoise Coast,” Dalaman Airport is the entrance route to cheap holidays on the Mediterranean and Adriatic coast, within easy reach of some of Turkey’s most popular resorts, including Marmaris, Oludeniz, Fethiye, Hisaronou and Antalya. Dalaman itself is becoming a very popular resort for cheap holidays, with White Water rafting on the Dalyan River, and the 6 km stretch of Iztuzu Beach. Heavily protected against tourism and water craft, Iztuzu has been awarded the title of “Best Open Space in Europe’’ and is a wonderful place to bring a young family. The harbour was for thousands of years the trading centre for the civilisation of Caunos, near Dalyan.

History is another reason people decide to take their holidays to Dalaman. As well as the beaches and wildlife there are a high number of ancient historical sites, such as the rock tombs at Fethiye and Caunos. Fethiye is a picturesque fishing town on a beautiful bay dotted with islands, guarded by an ancient fortress. On the clifftop you will find dozens of Lycian rock tombs. With columns and archways cut from the solid rock to resemble classical facades, they date from around the 4th Century BC.

Dalyan, just 35 km from the airport, is a beautiful resort with 5000 years of history. The wildlife of Dalyan creek is truly breathtaking, while the thermal pools and mud baths make this a prime reason for older people to book holidays to Dalaman. Meanwhile vibrant Marmaris, 84 km further north, is a fun-loving resort with spacious beaches, watersports, bars and evening entertainment – as well as an enchanting old town to explore.

Trains of the Future – The Future of Rail Journeys Oct 21

The future of rail journeys in the UK is very bright. Proposals have been made to construct a high-speed rail network between London and Birmingham, with future extensions to the north and Scotland. It’s likely that the trains will be able to travel at speeds of up to 250 mph.

Despite the excitement surrounding the project, which will dramatically cut journey times around the country, the work is not due to start until at least 2017. There will also be a public consultation, which will involve those who will be affected the most by the construction of the route. Nonetheless, proponents say that high-speed train trips can boost jobs and economic growth.

Transport Secretary Lord Adonis believes that the line would create £2 for every £1 spent and would create around 10,000 jobs. While the first 120 miles between the West Midlands and London would cost upwards of £17.4 billion, it would drop to half that for the cost per mile beyond Birmingham.

Those in favour of the line say that a high-speed rail system for UK rail journeys would cut down on domestic flights, take vehicles off the road, and ease volume on the current rail network, so that even communities not served by high-speed line could still take advantage of the existing rail network. This is a much less polluting alternative, according to proponents, than current transportation options like the automobile are. A low carbon economy is the ultimate goal.

That said, the public is to be consulted so that high-speed rail can certainly be paid for even as the existing network is maintained, even during this time of constraint in public finances. A new high-speed rail network is currently being developed by High-Speed Two, a government-backed company that’s developing a new high-speed rail network that’s initially to be established between London and Birmingham.

There are concerns to the construction of the high-speed route. Many have argued that the beautiful landscape in the Chilterns could be significantly and seriously altered by the proposed route. Government proposals are being explored to see how these drawbacks could be addressed, through means such as tunnelling and design.

Concerns remain that high-speed rail definitely becomes a truly viable and easy means to travel that’s an alternative to plane travel to Scotland. For example, while melding it with the current network and taking care to protect the environment, the landscape, and the integration of the current system without disruption.

Why A Coast To Coast Rail Tour Beats Route 66 Oct 21

If you are looking to travel across America, exploring the sights as you go, there are two main ways you can do this. There is the driving option, namely Route 66, along with going by train and taking a coast to coast rail tour.

To begin with, when you travel down Route 66, you will notice something quickly. The original route doesn’t have a continual path anymore. Due to changes in travel and roadway conditions, many parts of the original roadway are now broken into small tourist sections instead.

San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge 8 Istock 540300 Why A Coast To Coast Rail Tour Beats Route 66

When you take USA rail travel, you do find that your options remain the same. Rail routes across the States are well maintained and they offer a quick and easy way to travel across the country. Plus, you never run the risk getting lost.

As you go on a coast to coast rail tour, another benefit you have is that you can get some sleep on board the transport. For the price of a ticket, you gain access to a section designed for you to sleep, which means you can choose to watch the sights go by, or catch up with some beauty sleep before arriving at your next destination.

While some people think that going by car gives them more options, they couldn’t be more wrong. When you head out on USA rail travel, you have the chance to still explore the country. There will still be stops in important locations and you can spend some time looking at the sights along the way. The big perk is that you get to see sections of country that aren’t accessible by vehicle.

Along with this, there are no surprise costs when you take a coast to coast rail tour. When you take your own car, you stand a chance of facing extra costs, such as breaking down, or requiring new tyres.

Route 66 also has another drawback and that is that travel can be difficult in the sections that are still open. If you need to stop for gas on this route, you will find that not every gas station will be open at all times. This means, if you are travelling later at night, you might find yourself going hundreds of miles between gas stations. A train though, doesn’t have to worry about these frequent stops and can travel day or night.

England Rail Tours: History of the West Coast Main Line Oct 21

England’s West Coast Main Line (WCML) is part of the National Rail system and has been operational since the 19th century. With the regions that are serviced by the WCML it is one of the busiest passenger and freight railway routes in Britain and the foundation to the country’s transportation. Passengers make their way through the United Kingdom on an England rail tour stretching from London Euston all the way into southern Scotland’s Glasgow Central terminal.

Originally the West Coast Main Line was conceived with the use of several individual lines run by numerous companies in the 1830s through the 1870s. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway sparked the interest to build the network of intercity lines that would become the WCML. A few of these lines include the London and Birmingham Railway which became the southern section, the Trent Valley Railway, and the Caledonia Railway.

Into the twentieth century the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) would be grouped together in 1923 under the Railways Act of 1921. The new amalgamation competed with other railways of the time to decrease the time involved in the journey from beginning to end. This succeeded in the 1930s with the Coronation Scot, that was able to travel London to Glasgow in a mere 6.5 hours. The line received its name in 1947 when nationalisation occurred and British Railway’s London Midland and Scottish Regions gained control of the routes.

Electrified rails were brought to the WCML between 1959 and 1974. The engines went through regeneration from steam to diesel to electric to accommodate the new rail tracks. In 1966 new high speed trains were introduced with some of the fastest times yet achieved, including from London to Manchester in only 2.5 hours. With speeds reaching 110mph (176kph) the Class 86 and 87 locomotives became the flagships of the British Railway brand. Air conditioned Mark 2 and 3 designs came on line in 1974.

The twenty-first century brought further changes to the WCML with modernisations that would demolish stations for redevelopment purposes. Victorian architecture was replaced with more contemporary glass and concrete structures. Faster speeds were called upon the franchise owned by Virgin trains since the 1990s for more convenient journey times. By September 2006 a Pendolino train managed the 401ml/645km trip from London to Glasgow in just under four hours. December 2008 marked the end of the modernisation of the West Coast Main Line.

Currently there are over a dozen different coaches available for travel on an England rail tour. You can take a trip from London to any number of regions in anywhere between 1-5 hours. For instance you can make it from London to Birmingham New Street, in one hour, or to Chester, Manchester Piccadilly, Liverpool Lime Street in two or to Holyhead in 3.5 hours.

History of Trains – 5 Great Train Robberies Oct 21

Although train robberies are not really something you have to worry about today, they are great to remember for the history they bring. Below, you will find five of the greatest train robberies in history:

November 5, 1870

During this rail journey, people found their trip coming to a halt as the Central Pacific Passenger train was overtaken. The group of robbers decided on this train following a tip that it would be carrying gold worth sixty thousand dollars. After boarding the train, the robbers forced the conductor to separate the engine by application of the brakes. Following this, the conductor was taken to the express car in order to help them gain access to the men inside. During this excursion, the gang of robbers got away with a total of $41, 000 in gold coins.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway 540400 History of Trains 5 Great Train Robberies

July 21, 1873

Orchestrated by Jesse James, who already had quite a reputation and was known for leading a life of crime, the robbery of July 1873 is one of the most well known. It happened near the Adair, Iowa station, where James and his men had loosened portions of the track in addition to attaching a rope near the station.

Although the engineer noticed the rope tied to the tracks, it was too late. By the time he had started stopping the train it had been derailed, which killed the engineer. This made the Jesse James gang $3,000 richer.

May 15, 1855

The 1855 ‘Great gold’ train robbery in London, England is known as one of the largest train heists in history. The robbery occurred as the South Eastern Railway train headed from England to France. However, no one noticed what had happened until it was too late. Edward Agar and William Pierce obtained a copy of the keys to the train, which held a large amount of gold. Following the removal of the gold, they replaced it with lead. Although they were not caught at the time, Edward Agar was later investigated then arrested.

September 27, 1908

In the early hours of September 27th 1908, the train robbery known as the Bezdany raid occurred. It happened near the area now known as Bezdonzys within a Russian Empire passenger and mail train. Jozef Pilsudski led the attack with twenty people by his side.

August 8, 1963

This particular train was travelling from Glasgow to London and had a total of twelve carriages of mail. Due to the holidays, the train was holding 2.6 million in bank notes, which would equal to more than $62 million in today’s society. The robbery occurred when the train was brought to a stop, due to a red signal that had been tampered with.

The Busiest Train Stations in the UK Outside of London Oct 21

Trains are a convenient means of transport for many people. They carry a large number of people and thus reduce the number of vehicles travelling on roads.

Trains operate according to time schedules and allow efficient planning of business. Railway services in the United Kingdom operate many trains from major cities and beyond. Some companies operate England rail tours around the UK and continental Europe.

Outside London, the busiest railway stations are Birmingham New Street, Glasgow Central, Leeds and Manchester Piccadilly. Because of its increasing importance, the government has commenced a re-development program to the sum of £550 million to modernise the station. However, it has a low customer satisfaction rating at 52%, way below the national average of 60%.

Leeds station is the main railway station in the West Yorkshire county. It connects to many other destinations including train trips to London, Bristol, Plymouth, Nottingham and other regional centres in Yorkshire.

Leeds railway station is the busiest in Northern England and the third busiest in the UK outside London. Statistics indicate that 36 million people traverse the station every year. It has 17 platforms serving various destinations. A number of retail outlets are also located within the station.

Manchester Piccadilly railway station is the main station in the city of Manchester, with 12 platforms and connecting to cities across the UK, including London, Birmingham New Street, Edinburgh and Glasgow Central among many other stations. Holidaying outside the Euro zone – Benefits of Going to Sharm el Sheikh Oct 13

Holidaying outside the Euro zone – Benefits of Going to Sharm el Sheikh

With the pound performing so badly against the Euro, now might be the time to think about travelling further afield, outside the Eurozone. Luckily, there’s plenty of options to Greece and the Balearics; holidays to Sharm El Sheikh, on the Red Sea, for instance.

Sharm El Sheikh is one of the best value holidays you can take right now. With the gleaming new airport increasing the number of cheap flights, plus the favourable exchange rate of the GB pound, Sharm is a great alternative to the beach resorts of Greece and Spain. Children love the European-style beaches, hotels and restaurants, and while Sharm may lack the cultural attractions associated with traditional Egypt Holidays, it’s still possible to visit some of the ancient sites. Mount Sinai is less than an hour’s drive away, and though the Pyramids are a bit of a trek, the trip is still possible.

Holidays to Sharm El Sheikh are ideal for families with children. The hotel rooms are spacious, clean and well equipped, pools are safe and well maintained, and often have water parks. There are two public parks at Na’ama Bay, the main resort area. One thing you should do is explore the spectacular coral reefs, which are rich with exotic marine life. Take a diving lesson, explore by mini-submarine or have a ride on a glass bottom boat. Whichever you choose, there is nothing in the Eurozone to match it.

The restaurants at Sharm El Sheikh are as eclectic as the nightlife, which ranges from traditional Bedouin cafes to lively discos. Choose authentic Egyptian restaurants, or go to more familiar outlets like KFC or Pizza Hut. There are even European pubs and restaurants, for example English-style pubs selling traditional Sunday roasts.

Egypt holidays in Sharm El Sheikh offer everything you could hope for: endless sunshine; sandy beaches; watersports; great hotels, first-class entertainment and a welcome that’s second to none.
